Big-Little Skip Survivor

This 4v4 drill that can be found on the JM3 YouTube Channel, is a great way to work on one of the most important situations in the sport: the Big-Little Invert AND the ensuing round of dodge/slide/recovery. This video provides a detailed white board explanation of the drill set up and concludes with video examples from Mountain Vista HS a few years back.  The communication, slide decisions, slide and recovery that go on during Big-Little Inverts is critical for any defense and the next round of slide and recovery is one of the most difficult situations any defense will face.

If you're looking for great drills like this one, subscribe to the JM3 Coaches Training Program!  Enjoy!

The Curve Ball

This deceptive shot is what you will see nearly every Canadian and Native box player shoot in order to create misdirection deception in their shot.  Similar to the way a sidearm swing allows you to pull the ball back nearside because the swing angle sells far side, this is an inside out version where the goalie thinks your shooting a nearside "Twister" but you're actually pushing it to the far side!  This shot is phenomenal for 5 hole shots as well.  Every shooter should have a variation of this in their repertoire for mid range shots where you don't have a lot of time to "Hold" the goalie up or pull your shot.

This shot can be done in women's lacrosse too!  Goalies have a very hard time reading this shot and it's actually pretty easy for the shooter!  Try it on free position shots and on any mid range on the run shot!  If you get strong enough, this shot could be used on an 8 meter rip as well.

Austin Staats shoots as nasty of a Curve Ball as you will ever see!  Watch the way the goalie goes the wrong way on this release!

Here is a Curve Ball Demo my son Colin did for me in 2020 during covid lockdown.  At the time the Munro family and JM3 Athletes from all over the nation were doing a lot of Backyard Curriculum games like shooting on dad.  I asked Colin to quickly explain the shot he learned playing box lacrosse in Canada!

One of the best ways to practice your Curve Ball once you have the shot down against a goalie is in pick up games!  Watch this shot a few times!  You will see why it's so important to master!

JM3 Training Highlight Video

If you want to see what JM3 Training looks like, check out this video from Mike O'Neil's 3d Colorado 2028 team.  The development of these 7th grade girls is phenomenal!  The drill environments are simply situations that help the girls learn the most important principles of the game:

  • Possession
  • Passing
  • Picking
  • Deception
  • Communication
  • Reading the defense

Unlike most practices where you will see specific techniques taught and repped endlessly, in our Constraints Led Approach oriented practices, we create live situations with various constraints and tasks which allow skills to emerge as solutions to the problem the athlete is facing at the time.  One must understand the this equation: Skill = technique + decision (which is related to the situation).

At JM3 Sports we work with athletes, coaches, programs through in person and online resources.  Our JM3 Athlete program, JM3 Coach Program, in person Workshops, and JM3 Training Camps all leverage the power of the Constraints Led Approach, Free Play, and video breakdown.

If you would like to learn how to run a practice like this, or if you would like to have your athletes play in environments like this, feel free to reach out via [email protected].

By the way, I LOVE THIS PRACTICE PLAN that Mike O'Neil put together!

The JM3 Athlete Development Model

Below is a little highlight video from our Colorado Pick up crew of JM3 Athletes and is a great example of how a mix of ages and boys/girls provides an amazing opportunity for everyone to learn.  The older kids clearly have physical advantages over the younger kids and as a result, they are slowing down, using deception, focusing on setting up teammates rather than just dodging, communicating team play as well as moving without the ball.  Small nets with a crease and a goalie stick make it harder to score than your typical field practice scenario and the poise learned in handling the ball in traffic and finding a way to score will translate!

In our JM3 Athlete Program the pick up games provide an amazing implicit learning opportunity from the game itself, later on we watch the film on a Zoom call where the athletes learn what actually happened!  You would be blown away if you knew how much can be learned from these games both in real time and on video.  Every fundamental principle of the game is happening: draw and dump, 2man on and off ball reads, deception of all kinds, seeing the field, anticipation, communication etc.  In real time the athletes simply play!  They are in the zone, having fun, and can experiment with new contingencies.

How do human beings operate?  They perceive their surroundings and act (make a decision).  This is how we drive a car,  socialize,  run a meeting, play sports... literally everything.  It's called Perception-Action Coupling and it's exactly what these JM3 Athletes are repping in the various pick up game environments we are creating.

The Power of Film: in the space between perception and action, experience and understanding guide our decisions.  When we've watched the film and we understand what to look for, we can make better decision.  The JM3 Athlete Development Model is incredibly effective and efficient.  Feel free to reach out if you want more information!

And enjoy this film!  There's pretty sick stuff going on!
