Virtual Lacrosse Summit

Last week we ran the fourth Virtual Lacrosse Summit of 2019 and it was awesome!  There will be free replays of all summit talks coming up next week, so keep an eye out for the email!

It's impossible to say which talks were the best. but here are a few thoughts!

  • The pro-player breakdowns are INCREDIBLE!  For kids who want to get better, is there a better way than to not only view the skills and decisions but to get game context, thought process, plus hind sight?
  • The Box Lacrosse breakdowns take the articulation of skill and IQ to another level.  If you've never watched one of these, it will blow your mind!
  • The college coaches from men's and women's lacrosse did fantastic presentations with footage from their practices and games.
  • Plus, there are amazing presentations on...

Phi-Lacrosse-ophy Podcast with Richmond Head Coach Dan Chemotti

This is a great listen!  Coach Chemotti is a class act, has a history of winning, and when you hear his story and who his mentors are, you will understand why.  A product of West Genee and Duke, Dan had coaching stops at Dartmouth, St Johns and Loyola where he was part of the 2012 National championship team. In six years The Spiders have won the league 3 times and been to three NCAA Tournaments!

Why Coaches Education Doesn't Work

Many coaches are un-coachable.  I hate to say it, but it's true.  Over the years I have spent a ton of time with coaches, talking lacrosse, watching film, drawing up the x's and o's, inviting them to practices.... and they literally never...

The Coquitlam Jr Adanacs

Last Sunday night was the end of an era as the Coquitlam Jr Adanacs were bounced from the Minto Cup with a loss to the Victoria Shamrocks and my son Colin played his last Jr A game for one of the great organizations in the history of box lacrosse.  Becoming the first US player ever to win a Minto in 2016 and following it up with another national championship last year against the Brampton Excelsiors highlights a five year run in Coquitlam that has been so special.  The friends and families,, the teammates, "Wings and Rings" at the "B", the Shack, the Rookie Parties, the shoot arounds, hanging out at outdoor boxes on summer evenings, and living in a true box lacrosse culture has been so special to our son.  For my wife and me, we are just so thankful that Colin was able to follow his...

A Summer in Canada

My daughters and I spent the month of June in Niagara on the Lake, (NOTL) Ontario that was truly one of the best experiences a father could ever hope for!  I got to play pick up games with my daughters and their friends pretty much every day! This was the second summer that a couple of my buddies and I rented a house in NOTL so our daughters could play girls box lacrosse in St. Catharines, ON and it was the ultimate opportunity for the kids to get better at lacrosse and have an awesome summer!

I purposely gave the girls their space by going them access to my car and working at my buddy Sean Allen's house during...

Best Fake Ever

My favorite team in the PLL is the Chaos, coached by my good friend and former teammate Andy Towers.  I love the way they play offense combining box players with traditional field players; the insane skill of one handed players combined with hyper athletic, two handed players, all making good decisions and playing unselfishly.  Attackman, Connor Fields is my favorite player in the world right now.  An unselfish X guy, who is an incredible decision maker, Fields uses deception, IQ and repertoire fakes, moves, passes and shots that are mind blowing!

Everyone has probably seen this fake by now.  I have watched it 100 times trying to identify the subtleties of the entire play.  If you listened to the interview, Fields noted that he had hurled a BTB shot at...

Summer Recruiting Sanity

Like many parents around the country this weekend, I'm at a summer recruiting tournament with my aspiring college lacrosse player!  It's early in the summer recruiting and with the heightened excitement to play travel lacrosse with friends and against new competition, staying in team hotels and fun Friday night dinners also comes stress.  Stress can hit even the best of us who are trying to keep everything in perspective and can ruin the weekend for everyone involved!  The key to enjoying the weekend is to set proper expectations.  Here are a few:

  • When your son or daughter was born, you weren't thinking about college lacrosse.  You hoped they would grow up happy and healthy, to learn life lessons through successes and failures and someday go to college.  Our kids are...

Memorial Day Weekend might be my favorite weekend of the year!  Graduation parties, barbecues, family and of course, Championship Weekend!  I hope you are enjoying it as much as I am!

Summer Recruiting

As spring high school lacrosse transitions to summer recruiting, please remember this: If you are not good enough, there is nothing to talk about!  Ask yourself, "How is my son or daughter going to get better this summer?"  If your answer is, "he/she is playing a ton of tourneys," you are hitting the nail right on the side!

I encourage all parents to actually count how many touches your kid gets in a game.  How many dodges, how many shots, how many times was he/she dodged against.  You will be shocked, dismayed, and depressed over how few touches players actually get in...
