Welcome to “A Lacrosse Weekend,” my weekly compilation of thoughts, ideas, history, stories, myths/truths about the great game of lacrosse! I hope you find it enjoyable.

I write to you today from Whitby, Ontario where both of my daughters are competing in a box lacrosse tournament, one in the Midget age group (15 & 16 year olds) and one in the Intermediate, 21 and under. Eight American girls from Colorado, Massachusetts, Tennessee, and North Carolina have made real box lacrosse a part of their summer. And it’s awesome! The girls love playing box lacrosse and the parents love watching it!I’ve written extensively on the benefits of box lacrosse in this blog, if you want to read more, click here.

I’ve started a podcast called the Phil-Lacrosse-ophy podcast and I think you will like it! I had Nick Myers, Head Coach at The Ohio State University on this week and it was awesome to hear his insights on leadership, player...

Welcome to “A Lacrosse Weekend,” my weekly compilation of thoughts, ideas, history, stories, myths/truths about the great game of lacrosse! I hope you find it enjoyable.

Since arriving to Canada on Memorial Day Friday we have played a lot of lacrosse! This has been the ultimate in authentic development and fun. Playing with friends and figuring stuff out. Shooting on box goalies never gets old! Here’s what we’ve done in the past 3 weeks:

7 St Kitts box games

8 St Kitts box practices

5 pick up games (two on Darris Kilgour’s reservation)

8 backyard skill, footwork, or TRX work outs

7 shooting sessions on a box goalie

Summer Genesis tourney

FCA Weekend Training Camp

Needless to say, we’re taking the weekend off from lacrosse! All our friends left on Thursday for the weekend and the only thing on the docket for Lucy and me is a Harry Styles concert up in Toronto tonight with my good friend Sean Allen and his daughter.

Welcome to “A Lacrosse Weekend,” my weekly compilation of thoughts, ideas, history, stories, myths/truths about the great game of lacrosse! I hope you find it interesting.

Today is my fourth straight weekend away from home as I’m writing this blog from another hotel lobby…the Jonestown, PA Fairfield Inn Lobby to be exact. I’m here with my wife and youngest daughter for a girl’s lacrosse tourney, Summer Genesis. The team Lucy’s playing for is called 212 Lacrosse and is run by former Tar Heel Lacrosse player, Mike Acee.

This 212 “2021” team is playing in support of Graham Harden, a North Carolina legend, “1991 Defenseman of the Year” who is battling ALS.Mike reached out to his vast network of friends in the Carolina Lacrosse family and lacrosse community and put together a roster of kids from all over North America: CA, UT, CO, TN, CT, NC, VA, ON,

Graham’s motto is “Game on”…. His first words...

Welcome to “A Lacrosse Weekend,” my weekly compilation of thoughts, ideas, history, stories, myths/truths about the great game of lacrosse! I hope you find it enjoyable.

I write today from the lobby of the Hilton-Garden Inn Rochester. Our daughters are attending the FCA Girls Lacrosse Training Camp this weekend and playing with their 2021 team. We have never participated in an FCA event and are really looking forward to it! Last night we kicked off our stay at a Roch-Vegas classic: Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, which is a restaurant, blues venue, and biker bar chain located mostly in upstate New York. It didn’t disappoint!

Yale Bulldogs are National Champions!

Congrats to Andy Shay and the Yale Lacrosse team for pulling off an epic run of excellence in all phases of the game (and probably a team AI of 215). Everything Yale did was sound and cutting edge. This team could have beaten teams of any era! Their offense was athletic, skilled, and balanced even though they have...

Welcome to “A Lacrosse Weekend,” my weekly compilation of thoughts, ideas, history, stories, myths/truths about the great game of lacrosse. I hope you find it interesting.

As you may recall, last week I wrote this blog from somewhere in Iowa as I drove across the country. I had planned on pulling over to watch the Denver-Albany game somewhere along the way and then I had a great idea when I crossed the Illinois border. I called Kevin Corrigan. “Kevin, are you watching lacrosse or mowing the lawn?” I asked. “Mowing the damn lawn!” was his reply. “Well, I’m driving by South Bend in a couple hours… how about we watch the second game?” So I swung by KC’s house had some pizza and a couple sodas and watched a great lacrosse game. I couldn’t have planned that any better! Great guy, great family, sucks to be a coach home on quarterfinal weekend, but good to have a distraction!

Notes from my week in London

The Open Road

I write this week’s blog from a coffee shop in the Ramada Inn that I rolled into last night at 1am, somewhere between Des Moines and Davenport, Iowa. My destination: St Catharines, Ontario. As I mentioned in a prior edition of this blog, my daughter and I are living up there for the summer because she wanted to play girls box lacrosse this summer.

The Stones

Lucy’s first box tourney isn’t until next weekend, and it feels a little crazy to be leaving Colorado for the summer on May 18th, but I have one of the sickest guy’s trip ever planned so I had to leave a week early. Three buddies and I are going to the Rolling Stones in London, England on Tuesday night! It’s on my bucket list! I’ve never seen the Stones…I actually...

A New Beginning and an End of an Era

Spring brings renewed life, flowers, warm weather and a feeling of “It’s great to be alive” like none other. And as the we get deeper into spring, it also brings the end of a season, the end of a school year, graduations and goodbyes to seniors. We are all so lucky to have spring, lacrosse and our teams in our lives!

Yale - UMass

In a rematch from an early season Yale victory, this is going to be a street fight of a game. Greg Canella’s Minutemen have won 12 games this year and are averaging 12 goals/game. Yale is the favorite for good reason - they have Ben Reeves, Tewaaraton Finalist (who is also “wicked Smaht”) leading their offense which is averaging 14 goals per game.Yale head coach Andy Shay...

Happy Cinco De Mayo! I can’t believe it’s May already! Where does the time go? It’s the last weekend of the NCAA DI regular season with selection Sunday coming up! The weather is getting nice and so is the college lacrosse. What’s better than turning on ESPNU during tournament time?!?!

Yale 21 Penn 6

Holy $&%# what a beat down that was! Did you hear the post game comments from Matt Gaudet? Something like, “We don’t like Penn.” I love it! The Hamilton, Ontario product scored 7 goals in that game. He also said, “American goalies are not used to ‘Twisters’ …. All you kids out there, learn how to shoot twisters!

Yale Lacrosse

What Andy Shay has done at Yale has been amazing. Arguably the best...

Notre Dame 14 - Duke 11

With their backs against the wall and a fully healthy offense, the Irish prevailed in the ACC Semi-Final over Duke 14-11. Costabile and Gleason in the midfield for ND give them such an offensive punch of dodging, playmaking, and athleticism. They are a totally different team with those two healthy. And Ryder Garnsey with 5 G’s! Such a fun player to watch! Garnsey uses hesitation moves as well as any player in college lacrosse right now! Watch and learn!

Notre Dame Defense

Position, posture, and head turns….these are the visible traits of ND’s defense. Communication is the invisible glue. Nobody on the planet does a better job of scaling these fundamentals than Gerry Byrne!

Virginia 11 - Syracuse 10

Big College Lacrosse Weekend!

Johns Hopkins/Penn State

This game has huge implications for the Big 10 Tourney. Right now, Michigan is clearly 6th place. Maryland and Hopkins are both 2-0 and in the drivers seat. PSU/OSU/RUT are all fighting for 2 spots. What a tough league! JHU is getting saves, winning face offs and Coach Benson has the offense playing their classic invert, spaghetti motions with some super slick players! PSU looked tough against MD last week! Should be a great tilt!

UNC/Syracuse

Need them Heels to get a dub! Of course I’m totally biased here, but it is do or die for UNC.They’ve been pretty banged up and with a “Next guy up” approach they have had some great performances out of nowhere, like Matt Gavin’s 3 goal...
