Pandemic's Impact on Recruiting

At the outset of the pandemic, the NCAA enacted a Dead Period for DI coaches which means coaches are not allowed to have on or off campus contact with prospects.  Coaches can't evaluate prospects, can't run or attend camps, and are restricted from meeting with prospects or prospects' families on or off campus.  The Dead Period has been extended to the end of August, which has completely eliminated the summer of 2020 from a "Live" evaluation perspective.

Film has become critical!  With good quality film and a good camera angle, coaches can actually achieve a more accurate evaluation on film than they could watching live play because they can pause and rewind.  That said, coaches can't feel 100% comfortable with a prospect from film...

Munro Family RV Trip

On Thursday 5/28 my family and I loaded up the RV and headed east.  We will be spending the month of June in Narragansett, Rhode Island hanging out with family and friends, playing lacrosse, and finally turning the page on the spring that wasn't.  This will be my final installment of this blog until I get back to Denver.

The #1 Rule, No #2

It was a memorable family experience in the RV for a 2000 mile journey to our kids' paradise.  I'm not sure anyone will want to do it again anytime soon, but it was fun nonetheless.  He had some great laughs, fights,  and the dog.... well, he made it.  Our dog is so old, he can hardly walk and is pretty mental.  He finally adjusted and actually laid down after 7 hours of standing.

Lacrosse Game in Every State

One of our goals was...

Army Head Coach Joe Alberici and I had a great catch up the other day and when our pre-podcast conversation lasted 1:45 we had to reschedule for the next day!  I love talking with Joe Alberici!  He's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, so thoughtful and interested, and makes you feel good about yourself!  Joe is also a learning machine!  He shared with me the 15-20 podcasts he listens to, the books he reads, and the different ways he studies the game.  This was coach A's second time on the Phi-Lacrosse-ophy podcast with me and we had a free form conversation which is what we usually do when we get to catch up: talk lacrosse, what's new, and share interesting ideas, thoughts, drills, etc.  I think you will love this podcast!  Click here to listen!

I sat down and recorded with Taylor Wray, Head Coach St Joe's, this week and if you don't know much about T-Wray,  give this a listen!  He's a great guy, who has build St Joe's into a team right on the verge of winning big!  This year they knocked off Delaware, Providence, and lost a heartbreaker to Penn 13-12.  A native of Edmonton Alberta, Coach Wray grew up playing box lacrosse, won a couple Minto Cups with the  Burnaby Laker dynasty of the early 2000's, and was recruited to play attack at Duke.  By the time he was senior, Taylor was a lock down defender who went on to play that position for Team Canada, where he is now also the defensive coordinator.

The biggest takeaway from T-Wray is he is a great guy and a winner.  Our conversations about he creates culture,...

Duke Assistant, Ron Caputo, represents the phrase, "Behind every great Head Coach, there is a great assistant."  Listening to Ron describe his lacrosse journey, what he learned along the way, and what was meaningful, you get a solid understanding of why this guy is so special; He is as interested as he is interesting (I used this description once about the Late Great Dave Huntley).  Ronny loves talking lacrosse and I love talking lacrosse so it was a match made in heaven!  Ron started out at Duke as the Defensive Coordinator, then switched to the offensive side of the ball where he was OC and won three national championships!  Now he's back on the defensive side.  His Breadth of knowledge is vast.  We talk about the evolution of the Razor Pick, a lot about...

Legendary Coach Dave Cottle joined me earlier this week for an incredibly interesting podcast.  Dave is quite simply one of the smartest lacrosse guys you will ever meet and is always willing to share his wealth of knowledge.  Coach Cottle built the program at Loyola, had a great 10 year run at Maryland where he went to several Final Fours, and won three MLL Championships as Head Coach of the Bayhawks.  At the forefront of the modernization of the game, our conversation touches on the evolution of offense, defense, recruiting, and 2man game.  You will love this conversation!  Click here to listen!

Coach Cottle sent me this picture after our conversation.  Check out the two top left guys!  A young Dave Cottle and Dave Huntley!  I miss my friend Hunts!

I've been cranking out podcasts during quarantine.  Lacrosse conversations keep my mind off all the worry and trouble that this pandemic is causing.  I hope other folks out there have found an oasis of lacrosse as a great way to escape like I have.

Jeff Tambroni, Head Coach Penn State

Jeff is one of the truly great guys in the sport. We kick off the conversation talking culture, then move on to the value of the Free Play model of development, a deep dive into analytics and how it might effect recruiting, we reference the podcast I did with Michael Mauboussin on Analytics almost two years ago.  Michael has done work with Jeff.  We also talk quite a bit about "In Game Adjustments" which was a fascinating topic.  Recruiting in this pandemic was our final topic...

Virtual Lacrosse Summit

What a week of learning!  One of my favorite things to do is to continue to "Sharpen the Saw" and Q2 VLS once again did the trick.  Below is a list of what I got from these talks!

Monday 4/13

Tom Mariano, Head Coach Pace University and MLL Bayhawks: I love Tommy's Keep Away Drill Called the Rondo Drill, where there are two 10x10 boxes, one with a 4v2 and the other with a 5v2, where the offense tries to move the ball with in and between boxes.  The 5v2 box opens up a great "Wall Pass" option.  I love this drill!

Kelly Amonte-Hiller, Head Coach Northwestern: The Wildcats have made a phenomenal improvement in their shooting percentage over the past few years with a commitment to shot selection and working on shooting ON GOALIES!  NU has three goalies on the roster...

A Grateful Quarantine

It's our fourth weekend in quarantine and while there are so many times I wish that we will all just wake up from this bad dream and it will be the weekend of March 14th, but we do have a lot to be grateful for.

Health Care Workers.  The courage and dedication of these people all over the country is amazing.  Thank you to all of you.  We need you and we love you.

Time with family.  I have three kids Colin, Emily, Lucy ages,  22, 21, and 17 respectively and they have been awesome in the face of this...

Phi-Lacrosse-ophy Podcasts

I have been cranking out podcasts since the beginning of the quarantine both to help people get their minds off this pandemic and to get my mind off it!  There have been some really deep lacrosse conversations with incredible people!

Michele Tumolo, Head Coach Wagner and one of the greatest women's lacrosse players in the world, joined Colleen Magarity and me on the Inside the 8 Podcast this week and it was and fun conversation about everything from flips/fake flips, deception, zone defense, and how to practice deception on your dog.  I think Michele enjoyed it to because she's just like me and Colleen, a lacrosse nerd!  Click here to listen!

Harvard Head Coach, Gerry Byrne joined me again this week in a conversation that always spans many topics from off ball defense to...
