Check out this clip from Lars Tiffany's JM3 Coaches Training Program webinar on Developing Transition. It is refreshing to hear the Head Coach of the back-to-back champs talk about keeping it simple! "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." Leonardo da Vinci

Mindset Skill of the Week | Character

Your character is completely unique to you and it defines how you carry yourself on a daily basis. If you have a better awareness of what your character strengths and weaknesses are, you are more likely to live in alignment with what's most important to you.

What is the lasting impression you leave on someone after an interaction? This is...

Burnout

Players, parents, and coaches are in a tough spot at this point of the summer. Summer tournaments are beginning to wind down and the level of play has generally dropped due to fatigue and mental burnout. Some kids are playing in back-to-back-to-back tournaments, showcases, prospect days, etc. Knowing how to prioritize your time and energy is huge!

One of the most important things to remember is that more is not always more. If the coach that you are really hoping to impress is watching you on your 12th straight day of lacrosse, that could have a negative effect on your recruiting. Coaches can't unsee what they have seen!

At the highest levels- athletes and coaches view ...

Mindset Skill of the Week | The Flow Channel

This graphic below on flow is so interesting! Flow is defined as a state of mind in which a person becomes fully immersed in an activity. It is one of the most elusive states of mind there is. In sports, we call it "being in the zone."

The graph shows that flow is found when the level of our skills is matched with a challenge right at the edge of our capabilities. A challenge too easy leads to boredom and a seemingly impossible challenge just leads to anxiety.

It is interesting to think of how this relates to youth sports, development, and even free play. Parents always want their kids to "play with and against the best", but...

Big Little Picks

Below is a great clip pulled from the JM3 Coaches Training Program on Big Little Picks and why they are so difficult to defend. Big Littles are a staple for offensive coordinators at the highest level for several reasons:

  • You are pulling another defender out of the middle which creates more space off-ball.
  • Match ups
  • Pick Communication is very difficult
  • Inverts are so close to the goal. One mistake and it's in the back of the net.
  • Opens up the inside game.

Check out the video on Why Big Littles Work!

Get Back On Your Line!

Below is a great clip from a Coaches Training Program webinar featuring Manhattan Head Coach, Drew Kelleher. He is discussing the importance of getting physical as a dodger as soon as you get even half a step on your man. A successful dodger is someone who consistently either creates scoring opportunities for himself or creates double teams and moves the ball. The best way to do this is by initiating contact and "getting back on your line." Check it out!

The Easiest CTO in the game!

Kevin Corrigan's Notre Dame teams are always disciplined and relentless on the ride. He says to his attackman, "your number one goal is to TURN THEM ONE TIME." If your team is not concerned with throwing checks and has the mentality to take a good angle and simply "turn them one time", you will generate some very easy caused turnovers! There's nothing better than turning a defenseman, getting some ball pressure, and watching him throw an over pass over someone's head. You see this all the time even at the highest level and it's a great rule to implement with your team to buy you more possessions. Don't allow them to beat you to the...

Reading The Defense

I've written a lot about the incredible benefits of the Principles Based Offense with none more important than the opportunity for coaches to prioritize and focus on arguably the most important part of any offense: Reading the Defense.  In traditional offenses, coaches must spend time, installing, teaching and repping, all of the different sets, motions or plays in the playbook.  Once the players know the offenses, the coaches can begin teaching the various "Reads" of how opposing teams will defend against each set/motion/play.   The advantage of the Principles Based Offense is a coach can invest more time in teaching how...

Putting Your Big-Little Invert On Steroids

Rolling a 3rd player behind the net on Big-Little Inverts  is a simple and incredibly effective way to create a very challenging situation for the defense.  In this 3man action behind, the law of "Addition by Subtraction" is in full effect, opening up the middle and leaving a 3v3 in front of the net.

  • Single invert, a slide leaves 4 to cover 5
  • Big-Little invert, slide leaves 3 to cover 4
  • 3man Action, a slide leaves 2 to cover 3

3man actions create complexity of communication and decision making for the defense yet are surprisingly easy for the offense.  Think about this, you're on...
