Welcome to "A Lacrosse Weekend" my weekly compilation of thoughts, ideas, stories, myths, truths, about the great game of lacrosse. I hope you enjoy it!

Today would have been an awesome day!  I was looking forward to March 28th!  Denver at Georgetown in an epic Big East Battle with national championship aspirations!  Instead, we are home on a beautiful spring morning with a few inches of snow.  It will be 48 and sunny today and the snow will be gone by early afternoon.  A family brunch is on the docket along with some family lacrosse.

Jon Torpey Podcast

One of my best friends and favorite people in the game is High Point Head Coach Jon Torpey.  Torp was my assistant at Denver for five seasons and is also a great guy to talk lacrosse with!  This discussion includes his favorite drill, 2man game, dodging techniques and the way he invented "Torp Soup" AKA Half & Half (half Maryland Crab, half Cream of Crab.  You will love this...

A New Lacrosse World

A lot has changed in a week.  For the first time ever, there is no lacrosse on a March Saturday and we are all sitting here bummed, pissed, scared, numb, and thinking of what might have been.  It seems like a lifetime of events happened over just a few days.  I join all of you, who are fans of the game and who have family members who have had their seasoned whisked away, feeling empty today.

My son's Georgetown team would have played Carolina today in an epic battle of unbeaten teams.   My older daughter is at Arizona State and they were having a great start to the new coaching staff's regime.  My youngest daughter is a junior in HS and I'm one of the coaches.   We had a game on Thursday night which I hope wasn't the first and last.  Our team is a special...

Podcast on Re-Classing

I did a Phi-Lacrosse-ophy Podcast with 3d NE Director, great friend and one of the best and smartest guys in the lacrosse business, Matt Rowley.  Our topic: Re-Classing.  We know there will be a lot of hate mail on this topic, but we felt educating folks was the right thing to do.  Matt and I dive into the lacrosse phenomenon of re-classing; its origins, when to consider doing it, how it works, why it won't work for you, and much more.  This is a must listen if you are a parent of an aspiring boys or girls lacrosse player.  Even if you despise the concept, you might as well know what you're up against!  Click here for the Re-Classing Podcast with Matt Rowley.

Thinking Back to Leap Year 2016

Happy Leap Year everyone!  With an extended February almost over and daylight savings time right around the corner, it finally feels like lacrosse season!  Every time there's a  Leap Year, it makes me think back four years.  Last Leap Year was 2016, my two older kids were Juniors in HS and we were dealing with the tragic loss of the Mountain Vista lacrosse coach, Dr Jake Herman, who was a mentor and great friend to so many.  Hard to believe it's been four years both because it seems so long ago and because time is flying by!  Jake Herman and I became very close coaching Vista Lacrosse together and he was an incredibly positive force on the lives of my children as well as so many other kids.  We miss you Jake!

Phi-Lacrosse-ophy Podcasts

Chris Bates, Head Coach of the PLL Archers and former Head Coach at Princeton and Drexel joined me in an an awesome interview!  Batesy is one of the best dudes around and it came through loud and clear as we talked about his lacrosse journey as a player and a coach right up to his current position of coaching at Episcopal Academy and his two sons for the past four years!  We go deep on the origins of the "Pairs" offense which was born of a phone call in August 2006.  Now it's the most popular offense in Division I (and maybe the hardest to guard!).  We talk PLL Archers and a little bit about some of his best players: Tom Schreiber, Will Manny, and Marcus Holman.  I hope you enjoy it!  Click here to listen to the Chris Bates Pod!

"In Season" Edition with PLL Chaos Head Coach Andy Towers is in full swing!  There's nothing I like doing more than talking lacrosse with AT.  His takes are thoughtful and often times hilarious!  Like when he said of Ric Beardsley doing the color commentary for the Syracuse-Colgate game, "You could smell the cologne right through the TV!"  We try and get a weekend recap of AT's top 20 every Monday by 5pm ET!

Phi-Lacrosse-ophy Podcast

Check out my latest podcast with Amherst College Head Coach John Thompson.  John has built a national power at Amherst having brought his team to 7 NCAA Tourneys, (six straight!) and to last year's title game.  As usual, this conversation begins with Coach Thompson's journey as a player at Brown, a grad assistant at Springfield, back to Brown for both Scott Nelson and Lars Tiffany, his first head coaching gig at Colby, and eventually to Amherst.  Coach Thompson is working on his PHD in Sports Psychology and applies his craft to his program in fascinating ways!  I think you will love this podcast!

I have already had a ton of feedback from listeners on how much they like this podcast!

JM3 College Tours

last year at this time I was in the middle of of a "Once in a lifetime" RV trip to 12 Division I Lacrosse Programs where my crew and I spent a full day at each school watching practice, sitting in on meetings, breaking bread, and talking, learning, sharing the great game of lacrosse!

  • Northwestern
  • Michigan
  • Notre Dame
  • Ohio State
  • Cleveland State
  • Penn State / Army Scrimmage
  • Colgate
  • Albany
  • Navy
  • Virginia
  • High Point

I call this a "Once in a lifetime" trip because when I started planning for this year i decided there was no way I was going to spend 12 days in an RV during a polar vortex again haha!  It was a blast and my road crew of Rocco Romero (Videographer), Matt Noble (Driver), and Drew Wardlow (Photographer and FCA rep!) made this trip the most amazing odyssey.
