JM3 Athletes Play

The biggest misconception about being a great athlete or getting to the next level is it has to be all about hard work.  Mantras like "Embrace the grind", "10,000 hours of deliberate practice", "Get your reps in" etc are what everyone thinks is the key to success.  This work ethic, while admirable won't help an athlete with the most important part of the game, which is Perception Action Coupling, otherwise known as Ecological Psychology.  An athlete must perceive what is happening around them, and make a decision to act and that action is executed with a skill or solution to the problem the athlete is facing.  Instantaneously recognizing the...

JM3 Athlete Training

This past June 70 JM3 Athletes and friends from all over the country joined Mike O'Neil and me in Denver for the first ever Colorado Girls Lacrosse Training Camp (CGTC).  This three day camp camp is unique in many ways.  First, as is the case with all JM3 Training events, the CGTC is free!  We invite our JM3 Athletes, their friends and our friends to ensure great competition and fun!  Mike O'Neil, Colleen Magarity and I provide high level coaching to create great on...

The Ultimate Way To Get Really Freaking Good at Lacrosse!

Summer is a chance for players to get a lot better, but instead of working hard, and worrying about showcases and shooting reps, how about just go out and play!  And play a lot!  Below is information I sent to my JM3 Athletes and Parents earlier this summer.

Playing pick up lacrosse (or any sport!) is by far the most impactful way your kids can spend their time this summer.  Check out this podcast on the science of play and how it it literally creates neural plasticity.  It will blow your mind!

If you are serious about learning how to help your players be the best they...

Spain Looks

I talk a lot about Spain Looks in my blogs lately and that's because they are very useful to create a stimulus for the offense when a 2man game isn't generating the advantage you're hoping for!  Sometimes the defense is successful versus your 2man games due to poor timing, pressure, spacing, bad reads by the offense or a lack of deception.  Mixing in a quick pick for the picker can create an easy goal!

Below are a couple examples of Spain Looks:

Here are a couple awesome examples of Spain Looks from a couple weeks ago at out JM3 Girls Training Camp in Denver!

Principles Based Offense In Youth Boy's Lacrosse

Earlier this week I had the amazing opportunity to coach a 2028 JM3 National Team at the Vail tournament and not only was it a lot of fun being up in Vail with a great group of people, but a great coaching and learning experience as well! I applied the concepts of the Principles Based Offense to a talented group of 12 year old boys, and by the end they were running a great offense!

Learn More about the JM3 Principles Based Lacrosse System by going to PrinciplesBasedLacrosse.com

Here were the five principles we focused on:

  1. Take great shots: at this age, kids take a lot of bad shots goalies can catch
  2. ...

Hostage Dribble

For the past several years, I've been teaching my JM3 Athletes in both boys and girls lacrosse the Hostage Dribble concept of getting a step on your man, cutting them off, and keeping them on your back .  Common in hoops, Hostage Dribble is an amazing way to buy time and space while giving yourself a great chance to create separation.

Watch this portion of an amazing breakdown by Alex Sarama of Basketball Immersion of Luka Doncic vs the "Drop Coverage" and you will learn a better sense of the power and opportunity of the Hostage Dribble!  If you want to see the whole breakdown for Alex's brilliant video, click here.

A Visit From Alex Sarama

If you haven't listened to the podcast I did with NBA Europe and Basketball Immersion content creator Alex Sarama, please click here and listen ASAP!  And take notes!  If you have already listened, I would encourage you listen again!  I've gone back and re-listened (which I usually do not do) because this is the most important and impactful content I've ever been a part of and I need to learn how to articulate these concepts the way Alex articulates them!

Amazingly, Alex was in Denver last week and was able to come visit me in Highlands Ranch and not only check out an epic street pick up game, but he also ran a hoop clinic...

A Big Recruiting Advantage This Summer

An onslaught of summer tournaments, showcases, and events is right around the corner and I want to share one of the biggest hacks your son or daughter can take advantage of in this extremely competitive world of college lacrosse recruiting:

Rest, Recovery and Sleep.

Stacking events back to back (or worse) will leave an athlete with a lesser performance. Period.  Being 100% fresh will allow an athlete to have a peak performance.  This is going to happen one way or another!

Don't underestimate sleep!!!!!!!

"Athletic performance is predicated on improving adaptive capacity, or the ability to...

How NOT to Get Recruited This Summer

Summer club tourneys and recruiting will soon be in full swing and the truth is, college lacrosse recruiting is getting significantly more competitive as there are more and more kids playing and training at high levels. Normally I give advice on what to do, but this time….

  • Play back to back or back to back to back events (no recovery)
  • Think about who's watching, your last play, what your coach said to you, what your parents said to you instead of being in the present with your attention directed to the play at hand.
  • Don’t dodge much
  • Don't pass much
  • "Be more selfish" out there
  • Do a ton of “Give...

A Breakdown of an NCAA Snub........ and a Pearl Jam Show

In April of 2020 I was supposed to go to my first ever Pearl Jam show with fellow Wolfpack member and great friend Mark Blake, but the pandemic ruined that along with everything else in 2020.  The rescheduled date was for this past week on May 12th.  When Mark reached out to let me know about the new date, I told him I'd love to go, but if ASU was in the NCAA Tourney there would be a conflict and I wouldn't be able to join him. As the regular season expired and ASU had earned a trip to the Pac 12 Championship game which capped off a great regular season, it looked like ASU...
