A Lacrosse Weekend 2.16.19

Welcome to "A Lacrosse Weekend" my weekly compilation of thoughts, ideas, stories, myths, truths about the great game of lacrosse. I hope you enjoy it!

A great lacrosse weekend began yesterday. My daughter, her teammate and I swung by the University of Denver to watch the Louisville Women's practice, which was awesome. Coach Teeter ran some great drills that I am going to steal for my girls high school team involving a ton of two man game concepts. A quick stop at Chipotle, then over to the ThunderRidge high school grass fields to shoot on a former DI men's goalie. We wanted to get some shots in and I needed to film a few things for the JM3 Girls Academy. At 6pm, the head coach of the T'Ridge girls team, Doc Srdoc, came by my house and we watched the Northwestern/Dartmouth game and talked about our upcoming season. Finally, I followed along with the Oregon/San Diego State game through my wife's texts as the Ducks are playing two games in Las Vegas this weekend.

Today's lacrosse on...

Welcome to "A Lacrosse Weekend" my weekly compilation of thoughts, stories, ideas, myths, truths about the great game of lacrosse. I hope you enjoy it!

College lacrosse season is now in full swing and I find myself writing to you from the Holiday Inn Express in Eugene, OR. We are here to watch our daughter and the Ducks take on Mercer. I don't think anyone else besides my wife and I can claim to have seen Mercer's men's and women's team in their respective openers! On the other coast our son and the Tarheels take on Furman. At least we live in the middle! It's going to really heat up in our household when HS lacrosse starts as I'm coaching my youngest daughter's team, which I'm so fired up for!

JM3 Road Trip Videos

This week I did a couple Facebook Lives where I shared a bunch of behind the scenes video, photos and stories from the greatest lacrosse trip ever! My RV crew and I are rooting hard for the teams we visited and so far so good! Congrats to High Point and Colgate on their...

JM3 Road Trip

This 12 day, 11 school RV adventure was a trip of a lifetime. Thanks to all the coaches and programs that made this tour possible and incredibly fun. Thanks to my crew Matt Noble (Driver/lacrosse spiritual leader), Rocco Romero (Navigator, videographer, and DJ) and Drew Wardlow (blogger, videographer, and all around great guy!). These guys were SO much fun to hang out with! I got the idea for the road trip brainstorming on ways to create incredible new content for the Coaches Training Program. We captured around 50 hours of video from conversations, whiteboard sessions, video and practice. Check out www.JM3Coaches.com for more info.

Virtual Lacrosse Summit

I have created about a year's worth of content in the last 3 weeks. The week prior to the JM3 Road Trip, I executed the first ever Virtual Lacrosse Summit ...

We have a special treat this week! A guest blog from my friend, mentor, and former coach Dom Starsia.

As I have mentioned in the past few weeks, I am in the middle of an epic lacrosse tour. So far we have visited Northwestern, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Cleveland State and today we’re off to Penn State for their Army scrimmage. We have shot a ton of video documenting this amazing trip, but for now if you want to read about our Odyssey, Drew Wardlow of FCA Lacrosse who has been traveling with us, is writing a daily blog of all the stories and occurrences for Inside Lacrosse. Check it out! JM3 Roadtrip: Day 4 at Ohio State

“Where’s My Ring?” by Dom Starsia

Having been fortunate to be part of some Championship teams, there is always a little bit of a question afterwards about who will receive a championship ring. I am sure that most coaches who find themselves faced with that fortuitous dilemma...

Lacrosse Virtual Summit

Wow! What a whirlwind! Such an amazing group of passionate and knowledgeable presenters and a myriad of topics: men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, offense/defense, rides, transition, skills, game breakdowns, youth lacrosse, box lacrosse, analytics, leadership, and business topics!

Here is the list of presenters:

    • TJ Buchanan, Technical Director US Lacrosse: "Small Games that do Big Things", drills, concepts and the science behind why small area games are critical for youth lacrosse.
    • John Paul, Head Coach PLL: "Attacking 10 man ride", if you want to run a 10 man, watch this presentation. JP also hooks us up with a sweet little wrinkle on a deceptive way to "fake" your 10 man and run a match-feet ride that gets your best LSM on a defender carrying it over.
    • Mikey Thompson, Head Coach Christopher Newport...

#LaxCon2019

I write you to this morning from the Philadelphia Downtown Marriott at the US Lacrosse Convention. It's always fun to see so many blasts from the past at this event, to feel the energy of 8000 lacrosse coaches, players, fans, and kids, as well as have the opportunity to listen and learn from some of the game's brightest minds.

There are endless presentations and live demos from pro players, college, HS, and pro coaches, box lacrosse, men's lacrosse and women's lacrosse.... it's an extravaganza!

Box on the Field

I will be doing a live demo at 4:45 today showing how to use box lacrosse drills and concepts to teach valuable lessons on the field. I will have a group of 14 year olds who I've never met, but I'm told are pretty good! I will do my best to mobilize the kids quickly and let the drills do the coaching. I...

Phi-Lacrosse-ophy Podcasts

Last June I decided to start a podcast based on "Lacrosse Philosophy" which is basically another way of saying, I decided to record the conversations I was having anyway! It's my favorite time of the week! My goal with these podcasts was to try and get into the minds of some of the biggest names in the sport and ask questions that would shed light, answer questions, and educate three distinct groups: parents, players, and coaches.

• Parents: if you listen to these podcasts, you will find out what to do in trying to navigate the murky waters of player development, club lacrosse and recruiting. Every guest gives their opinion on these three topics in one way or another. What's incredibly fascinating is hearing what they do with their own kids!

• Coaches: whether you are coaching...

The National Lacrosse League

The NLL kicks off the 2018-2019 season today! I love box lacrosse. I love NLL Lacrosse. I am mesmerized by the skill, creativity, toughness, and teamwork in this league. I literally never get sick of watching NLL Lacrosse. In honor of NLL "Opening Day" I'm dedicating today's blog to box lacrosse!

I get so many emails from folks with questions about box lacrosse. The topic comes up in my Phi-Lacrosse-ophy Podcast regularly, like it did this past week with John's Hopkins Head Coach, Dave Pietramala, where Petro details what he loves about recruiting Canadian box lacrosse players. Listen here!

In a 2011 study of DI Lacrosse scoring by Mike Mauboussin, Mike found that Canadians shooting percentage was 35% over a six year period while their US counterparts was 28%. (listen to the Podcast I did with Mike where...

IMLCA Convention

I write to you today from the Inner Harbor at the Downtown Marriott in Baltimore for the annual Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association Convention. What makes this weekend special is the fact that it was built around the business dealings of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association meetings where coaches from all Divisions I, II, and III convene to discuss rules, league meetings, and other NCAA Lacrosse topics. This means that every program in every Division is in attendance which was a great foundation for the IMLCA to build a coaches education event. I love this weekend personally because of the combination of it being a reunion of great friends in the coaching world and an opportunity to "Sharpen my saw!"

Welcome to A Lacrosse Weekend, my weekly compilation of thoughts, ideas, history, stories, myths/truths about the great game of lacrosse. I hoe you enjoy it!

This morning I write to you from Las Vegas as I'm attending US Lacrosse West Regional Conference. I'm presenting on Team Defense and Extra Man Offense today and totally pumped to watch the other speakers. I love nothing more than picking up a little tidbit of knowledge, maybe a different way of saying something or thinking about something. These little tidbits can often times open the door to huge revelations on things that are in plain sight. Plus, not a bad place to have a convention! I wish I would have thought of that!

BJ Grill

I have always made it a point to seek out interesting and knowledgeable lacrosse coaches, players and experts for the sake of learning. One such lacrosse expert I was chatting with a couple months ago was Patrick McEwen aka @LaxFilmRoom on twitter and we were discussing defense. We were talking...
