Thoughts on 2man Game

2man game is an incredibly powerful tool for any offense, but is misunderstood by many coaches and players which creates frustration when it doesn't seem to work.  This blog will attempt to provide a simple and practical explanation as to why 2man game is important and how players can change their paradigm to make 2man game exceedingly effective.

Let's start with some analytics: 2man game has higher offensive efficiencies than isolation. Joe Keegan, PLL writer and Director of Analytics along with the late great Dave Huntley have documented this fact through MLL and PLL stats over the past seven years.  2man game creates more...

The Greatest Drill Ever

4v4 Double Team is arguably the greatest drill in the history of drills!  This drill will have a huge impact on your team on both sides of the ball! I recommend your team master this drill by doing it multiple times per week!  I learned this drill from Mike "Bones" Waldvogel when I coached at Yale.  The Yale teams were shaped on both sides of the ball in my opinion because of the pressure applied in practice every day.  As a result of my experience at Yale, I've always believed the ability to apply and handle defensive pressure through ball pressure, pressure on adjacent passes (in the direction the ball is going), and staying on...

Podcast with Johns Hopkins Women's Lacrosse Head Coach Tim McCormack

This was one of my all time favorite podcasts!  McCormack, the former coach at Arizona State, is someone you would want to coach and mentor your kids.  Tim is consistent, positive, even keeled, kind, principled, motivated, curious, fearless, and literally tries to make lacrosse the best part of everybody's day.

Tim has been on a journey of learning and coaching that has developed into a model I think will change the game.  We chat about offense and player development and his evolution as he leveraged the Constraints Lead Approach to learning as well as a Principles Based Offense with simultaneous...

Bowdoin Head Coach Bill Mason Podcast

I think you will love getting to know Bill Mason on this podcast.  It is no wonder that his players had an epic first season under Mason; he is smart, down to earth, positive and has a great balance between leading and allowing his athletes to do the leading.  Bill clearly has a great thing going at Bowdoin in every way: great school, can recruit top talent, awesome assistant coaches, and a motivated group of kids who love to play!

Check out this excerpt from the podcast where Bill Mason talks about recruiting at Bowdoin College.

Phi-Lacrosse-ophy Podcast with Providence Head Coach Bobby Benson

This is a must listen podcast if you want to get the inside scoop on how Benson, one of the most respected offensive minds in the game, guided the Maryland Terapins to a National Championship with one of the best offenses we've ever seen!

The Maryland offense was marvelous: the intangibles of discipline, intelligence, and unselfishness combined shooting, ball movement, and efficiency in all phases of offense from transition to early offense and sub game, into 6v6 and EMO was literally as good as it gets.  If you read last week's blog about the Principles Based Offense you will see that Benson is...

Phi-Lacrosse-ophy Podcast

If you are interested in learning a new and holistic high performance approach to coaching lacrosse including the technical, the tactical, the physical and the psychological and an emphasis on the Principles Based Offense, I highly recommend you listen to the conversation I had with Christopher Newport Head Coach, Mikey Thompson.  This type of podcast is my favorite because it was a true conversation more than an interview.  Mikey and I became friends when he subscribed to the JM3 Coaches Training Program as a young head coach and at the time, was in a massive learning curve trying to get information on anything and everything.  We realized...

Harvard Head Coach Gerry Byrne Podcast

Yesterday I did a fantastic interview with Gerry Byrne, where we discussed in the context of Harvard Lacrosse: building culture, college lacrosse recruiting, 2man game on both sides of the ball and, as usual, we talked a lot of defense!  Gerry is, if not the best, one of the best defensive coaches / minds in the game and I LOVE listening to him expound on everything from V-Holds to communication, his non negotiable priorities to the way he teaches through creating drills from situations. I have always thought the way Byrnsey creates low impact defense vs defense environments, where the guys are intentionally...

Lake Placid Lacrosse

Sorry for not publishing "A Lacrosse Weekend" over the past few weeks, but it's so tough to do when I'm traveling in the summer.  On Saturday two weeks ago, we drove up to Lake Placid where I had the opportunity to coach my daughter and the Northwestern '22 and '23 commits!  What a privilege to get to know future Cats and coach with current players Carleigh Mahoney and Sam Smith who's sisters played on the team!  We ran the Northwestern Wildcat Offense of pick actions occurring on and off ball simultaneously combined with great ball movement.  I had coached this group at NU camp a few weeks ago in July and this was our...

JM3 Athletes Play

The biggest misconception about being a great athlete or getting to the next level is it has to be all about hard work.  Mantras like "Embrace the grind", "10,000 hours of deliberate practice", "Get your reps in" etc are what everyone thinks is the key to success.  This work ethic, while admirable won't help an athlete with the most important part of the game, which is Perception Action Coupling, otherwise known as Ecological Psychology.  An athlete must perceive what is happening around them, and make a decision to act and that action is executed with a skill or solution to the problem the athlete is facing.  Instantaneously recognizing the...
