Ryan Danehy Podcast
This week I had a great conversation with new Mercer Head Coach Ryan Danehy about his lacrosse journey, his mentors, what he learned from each one of them and how he wants to play now that he's a first time head coach!
RD's 16 year journey includes coaching stops (in reverse chronological order) at: Bucknell as Offensive Coordinator, NY Lizards, Penn Volunteer, 3d Lacrosse Director of Methodology, The University of Michigan, and Dartmouth where he coached for both Bill Wilson and PLL Chaos Head coach Andy Towers. Ryan's knowledge of the game through years of experiences with great coaches around comes out loud and clear!
Ryan is a...

How To Teach Multiple Hitching
Over the four and a half years of writing this blog, I have written about the power of multiple hitches many times. it's a skill that Canadian and Native box lacrosse players employ regularly, whereas US players generally do not. The reason is simple, In the US, kids are taught to catch it loaded, release a shot as quickly as humanly possible and this is repped endlessly in just about every shooting drill. Whereas In...

Big-Little Skip Survivor
This 4v4 drill that can be found on the JM3 YouTube Channel, is a great way to work on one of the most important situations in the sport: the Big-Little Invert AND the ensuing round of dodge/slide/recovery. This video provides a detailed white board explanation of the drill set up and concludes with video examples from Mountain Vista HS a few years...

Thoughts on 2man Game
2man game is an incredibly powerful tool for any offense, but is misunderstood by many coaches and players which creates frustration when it doesn't seem to work. This blog will attempt to provide a simple and practical explanation as to why 2man game is important and how players can change their paradigm to make 2man game exceedingly effective.
Let's start with some analytics: 2man game has higher offensive efficiencies than isolation. Joe Keegan, PLL writer and Director of Analytics along with the late great Dave Huntley have documented this fact through MLL and PLL stats over the past seven years. 2man game creates more...

The Greatest Drill Ever
4v4 Double Team is arguably the greatest drill in the history of drills! This drill will have a huge impact on your team on both sides of the ball! I recommend your team master this drill by doing it multiple times per week! I learned this drill from Mike "Bones" Waldvogel when I coached at Yale. The Yale teams were shaped on both sides of the ball in my opinion because of the pressure applied in practice every day. As a result of my experience at Yale, I've always believed the ability to apply and handle defensive pressure through ball pressure, pressure on adjacent passes (in the direction the ball is going), and staying on...

Podcast with Johns Hopkins Women's Lacrosse Head Coach Tim McCormack
This was one of my all time favorite podcasts! McCormack, the former coach at Arizona State, is someone you would want to coach and mentor your kids. Tim is consistent, positive, even keeled, kind, principled, motivated, curious, fearless, and literally tries to make lacrosse the best part of everybody's day.
Tim has been on a journey of learning and coaching that has developed into a model I think will change the game. We chat about offense and player development and his evolution as he leveraged the Constraints Lead Approach to learning as well as a Principles Based Offense with simultaneous...

Bowdoin Head Coach Bill Mason Podcast
I think you will love getting to know Bill Mason on this podcast. It is no wonder that his players had an epic first season under Mason; he is smart, down to earth, positive and has a great balance between leading and allowing his athletes to do the leading. Bill clearly has a great thing going at Bowdoin in every way: great school, can recruit top talent, awesome assistant coaches, and a motivated group of kids who love to play!
Check out this excerpt from the podcast where Bill Mason talks about recruiting at Bowdoin College.
